I was looking into nightshades today to see what plants were in this group. I found a surprise – an herb I’ve been taking is actually a nightshade; Ashwagandha! I will need to stop using this herb until I’m on the provocation side of the elimination/provocation diet apparently.

So, the nightshade’s are plants in the Solanaceae family. Many of these plants are poisonous and are not normally found in our diet, however; there are several that we enjoy eating. This is the complete listing I have found thus far:
- Potato (not sweet potatoes, just white potatoes)
- Tomato
- Tomatillo
- Tamarillo
- Eggplant
- Sweet or Bell Peppers
- Hot Peppers including Cayenne, jalepeno, habanero, pablano, etc…
- Cocona
- Cape gooseberries
- Garden Huckleberries (Solanum melanocerasum not regular Huckleberries Vaccinium resinosum)
- Goji Berries aka Wolf Berries
- Ashwagandha
- Paprika
- Pimentos
- Pepinos
- Tobacco
It will be interesting cooking without any of the above!
