I was looking into nightshades today to see what plants were in this group. I found a surprise – an herb I’ve been taking is actually a nightshade; Ashwagandha! I will need to stop using this herb until I’m on the provocation side of the elimination/provocation diet apparently.

So, the nightshade’s are plants in the Solanaceae family. Many of these plants are poisonous and are not normally found in our diet, however; there are several that we enjoy eating. This is the complete listing I have found thus far:

  • Potato (not sweet potatoes, just white potatoes)
  • Tomato
  • Tomatillo
  • Tamarillo
  • Eggplant
  • Sweet or Bell Peppers
  • Hot Peppers including Cayenne, jalepeno, habanero, pablano, etc…
  • Cocona
  • Cape gooseberries
  • Garden Huckleberries (Solanum melanocerasum not regular Huckleberries Vaccinium resinosum)
  • Goji Berries aka Wolf Berries
  • Ashwagandha
  • Paprika
  • Pimentos
  • Pepinos
  • Tobacco

It will be interesting cooking without any of the above!
