How to Make Your Own Carpet Freshening Powder

I found this simple yet wonderful little recipe for making your own carpet freshening powder. I realize this may not seem like a health related item, but those practicing aromatherapy may find it quite useful! Plus, I really do not like the fake aroma’s that are in the various carpet fresheners (air fresheners, aromatic candles, various detergents, etc….) I have found in stores, so this really intrigued my interest. It is so simple!

General Info

~ 6-8 drops of your chosen essential oil

~ 1/2 Cup baking soda

~ Container to put finished powder in

Mix together 1/2 cup of baking soda and 6-8 drops of any essential oil you enjoy the aroma of and sprinkle on your carpet before you vacuum – that’s it! I put the powder in a container, add the drops, screw on the lid, and then shake like crazy to get the drops dispersed throughout the powder.

Once you have it all shook up, you simply sprinkle onto your carpet, wait about 5-15 minutes or so, and then vacuum as usual. That’s it! I am not one for adding things to my cleaning to-do list, but this one is just so easy and the benefits are certainly worth it!

Personally, with children and pets, I find this a to be a wonderful way to help with possible unpleasant odors while being able to have a pleasant aroma that is all natural!

The essential oils you choose can be any you like the aroma of:

  • Lavender
  • Bergamot
  • Rose
  • Vanilla
  • Peppermint
  • Jasmine
  • etc…..

These are all commonly used in aromatherapy as well!

Your final powder should be stored in an airtight container. I usually don’t have anything left over to store being I only make 1/2 cup at a time. I am planning on recycling a powdered parmesan cheese container into the carpet freshening powder container as I think it would also make it easier to shake onto the carpet.

So far I have only used the Lavender myself. Most of the rooms we have carpet in are rooms we sit in to relax, so I figured Lavender would be a good aroma for relaxation. Our daughter isn’t big on the scent of lavender so she is going to be trying a different one. She likes the idea of Vanilla or a citrus aroma or maybe even a peppermint.
